Gianni Infantino Elected New FIFA President

The International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) elected Gianni Infantino as its new president on Friday, at a congress in Zurich

The 45-year-old Swiss-Italian won 115 votes. His closest rival, Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the president of the Asian football federation, claimed 88 votes in the second round, where only a simple majority of vote was required.

Infantino is taking over from Sepp Blatter, who has constantly blamed for corruption and financial mismanagement in FIFA.

Infantino has promised to reorganize world football’s scandal tainted governing body.

The newly elected FIFA president Swiss is fluent in five languages: Italian, French, German, English and Spanish. He studied law at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.

Infantino joined the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) — governing body of footbal in Europe — in August 2000 and held various roles and positions before working his way up to secretary general in October 2009.

Before joining UEFA he worked as secretary general of the International Centre for Sports Studies at the University of Neuchatel.

Infantino decided to run for FIFA president, after UEFA president Michel Platini was handed a provisional 90-day suspension over a corruption scandal.

He made the announcement on October 26, 2015, after receiving the unanimous backing of the UEFA Executive Committee.
