Earthquake Shakes Central Italy

Central Italy has been rocked by another strong earthquake; the latest since a deadly quake in August.

Italy’s civil protection authority says the powerful 6.6. magnitude quake Sunday morning brought down buildings in numerous places across the area. There were reports of minor injuries.

The 14th-century Basilica of St. Benedict in the Umbrian walled mountain town of Norcia crumbled, leaving only its facade. Benedictine monks prayed before the ruins.

Michele Franchi, the deputy mayor of Arquata del Tronto, told Rai television,”This morning’s quake has hit the few things that were left standing. We will have to start from scratch.”

The rumblings of Sunday’s earthquake were felt as far north as Bozano, near the Austrian border and as far south as the Puglia region at the southern tip of the Italian peninsula.

The epicenter of the shallow quake was six kilometers north of Norcia, and was felt in Rome — 117 kilometers away.

The region has been shaking with aftershocks since an August earthquake that killed nearly 300 people. Strong aftershocks hit the region last Wednesday.
