US Soldier Killed in Iraq

A U.S. serviceman has been killed in combat in northern Iraq, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Tuesday.

Secretary Carter told reporters in Stuttgart that the service member died as a result of “enemy fire.”

Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said the incident occurred near Mosul.

A U.S. military official told U.S. news agencies that the soldier was serving as an adviser to Kurdish Peshmerga troops. The official said the serviceman was killed by “direct fire” after Islamic State forces penetrated the Peshmerga front line.
