Masked assailants armed with machetes killed a blogger Tuesday in northeastern Bangladesh, police said, in the third such attack this year against a secular writer in the mostly Muslim country.
Authorities said the attackers hacked Ananta Bijoy Das to death in Sylhet city. They did not identify any suspects or motive.
Das wrote for a website called Mukto-Mona, which was formerly run by prominent Bangladeshi-American blogger Avijit Roy. In late February, Roy, who was known for writing in opposition to religious fundamentalism, was killed after leaving a book fair at Dhaka University.
Authorities arrested a suspect in Roy’s killing.
In a March attack similar to Tuesday’s assault on Das, three men hacked Washiqur Rahman to death in Dhaka. Police said Rahman was targeted for his anti-Islamic writings and arrested two suspects they said were students from a religious school.
