3 Suspects Arrested in India in Rape of Japanese Woman

Police in India have arrested three men accused of gang-raping a Japanese woman in the country’s east.

Authorities said they thought five men had kept the student, who is in her early 20s, hostage for almost three weeks in a village near the pilgrimage center of Bodh Gaya. Police said at least one of the suspects was a tour guide who took the woman to Bodh Gaya, where she was kept captive and raped.

Police said the woman escaped her captors last month and reached Kolkata, where she filed a complaint at the Japanese Consulate.

Sexual violence against women in India came under the international spotlight after the brutal gang rape of a 23-year-old girl on a moving bus in 2012. Laws have since been tightened, but activists say society’s attitude toward women needs to change radically to combat sexual harassment and violence.
