Hurricane Gonzalo Pummels Bermuda

Hurricane Gonzalo has pummeled Bermuda with torrential rains.

Officials say the hurricane’s winds and rains have knocked out most of the island’s power, plunging thousands of residents into the dark .

The U.S. National Hurricane Service says Gonzalo has maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour, but is now moving quickly away from Bermuda.

Forecasters say Gonzalo is headed north-northeast at 35 kilometers per hour and is expected to pass near the coast of Newfoundland Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
