Large Blast Rocks Mogadishu

Witnesses say a large explosion has rocked the Waberi district of the Somali capital Mogadishu.

They said gunfire followed the blast Sunday. Some reports said the explosion was a car bomb that detonated as Somali security forces were nearby. Other reports said the blast followed a suicide bomb near Mogadishu’s heavily-fortified international airport that houses African Union forces and embassies.

Few other details were immediately available.

On Thursday, an al-Shabab commander, Ibrahim Filey, and three other militants were killed in a confrontation with Somali forces in the southern town of Kurtun Waarey. Earlier in the week, Somali authorities said al-Shabab fighters killed six Somali soldiers in Baidoa, in an attack on a military checkpoint about 250 kilometers west of Mogadishu.
