The day after Donald Trump officially accepted the Republican presidential nomination, vowing to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, the two countries’ current presidents will meet.
President Barack Obama will be hosting Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto Friday for the Mexican leader’s first visit to the White House since January.
Pena Nieto has said Trump’s comments about Mexicans bringing drugs, crime and rape to the U.S. have hurt relations between the two countries. Pena Nieto has criticized the Republican presidential candidate, though he has said his government will work with whomever succeeds Obama.
The visit, which was just announced this week, is expected to build on discussions from the North American Leaders’ Summit in Ottawa less than a month ago. Obama met with Pena Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to hail the benefits of the 22-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, at a time when international trade deals are being attacked in the United States and Europe.
Together, the three countries account for almost 27 percent of the world’s economic output.
