US Troops to Train Syrian Rebels

The United States is planning to deploy more than 400 troops to train moderate Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State group.

The training is expected to begin in March.

The Defense One website said Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have agreed to host the training sessions.

The U.S. has not yet identified where it will draw its forces from for the training mission.

The training program is part of President Barack Obama’s multi-year plan to field local forces in Syria to halt and eventually roll back Islamic State fighters while pounding them with U.S.-led airstrikes.
