Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush spent a fourth night at a Texas hospital Friday after experiencing breathing problems.
A spokesman for Bush, 90, said he was in high spirits and continued to make progress. No further details of Bush’s condition were given.
The 41st U.S. president and father of former President George W. Bush was admitted to a Houston hospital Tuesday after experiencing shortness of breath. He received family visits on Christmas Day.
Bush spent seven weeks at the same hospital two years ago for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough.
Earlier this week, the White House released a statement saying President Barack Obama, who is vacationing in Hawaii, had been informed of the elder Bush’s illness. The statement said Obama and his wife, Michelle, “send their good wishes” to the ailing former president and his entire family.
George H.W. Bush was president from 1989 to 1993. He spent the previous eight years as Ronald Reagan’s vice president.
His son, George W. Bush, served two terms as president beginning in 2001. Another son, Jeb Bush, is considering his own White House bid in 2016.
